Tony Robbins: A man who can make “words” into million dollar products. What’s his secret?

In case you don’t know who is Tony Robbins, he is considered as one the most successful “Life Coach”. In case you’re not aware of what a life coach is, it is a person who counsels and encourages their clients on matters having to do with careers or personal challenges.

Another similar name for them would be: “Motivational Speaker, Career Coach” and so on. You might think that such a career or business won’t be profitable, but Tony is a good example of how profitable this line of business or career is.

As of February 2023, It is reported that he has an estimated net worth of US$ 600 million. According to online sources, he can charge between US$ 5,000 to US$ 7,200 for a six month session, or from US$ 10,000 to over US$ 15,000 for a 12 month session for each client.

As you can see, he can charge such high fees because he already has a very strong reputation in his field. But he mostly made his fortune from selling his books. It is reported that as of December 2022 he has sold over 15 million copies of his books.

His clients are one of the most successful and richest people in the US which includes celebrity talk show host and businessperson Oprah Winfrey, former president Bill Clinton and popular actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

Tony Robbins’ full name is Anthony Jay Robbins but his real name is Anthony Jay Mahavoric. He is of Croatian descent which both his original parents were. His mother remarried several times and he got his “Robbins” surname from one of his stepfathers who is Jim Robbins.

He came from a poor family with a mother who was addicted to drugs and alcohol. She was also physically abusive to her three children of which Tony was the oldest. His upbringing followed him through school were he was categorized as an outsider.

When he was about in high school, he started growing ten inches a year. This growth spurt was because he had a “pituitary tumor” which can be a painful sickness. He left home when he was 17 because he wasn’t anymore able to endure his family.

He worked as a janitor after school and helped families move during weekends. According to him, things started to turn around for him when on one of his moving jobs, he was able to talk to the rich landlord.

The landlord reportedly told him that the reason why he became rich was because his life was changed when he attended a seminar conducted by life coach, “Jim Rohn”.

Impressed with what Jim Rohn had done to the life of the landlord, Tony asked the landlord if he can get Tony into a Jim Rohn seminar for free. The landlord rejected his request stating that if he does so, Tony wouldn’t value Jim Rohn’s seminar.

This was when Tony had to make a tough decision. He was earning US$ 40 a week from his job and the Jim Rohn seminar costs US$ 35. Tony made the decision and sacrificed his week’s salary just to be able to attend the seminar.

He attended the seminar and eventually became close to Jim Rohn that he made Tony his protege. This was how Tony started his career as a public speaker. He soon mastered his craft by conducting hundreds of seminars all over North America.

At 26, he eventually became a millionaire and have a bestselling book. His life coaching empire continued growing and growing until he became a multimillionaire. But he never fails to give credit to Jim Rohn whom he attributed with his success.

According to the “International Coaching Federation”, a group that represents among other, life coaches, the global market size for life coaching services as of 2020 is US$ 15 billion of which 33% of coaches are in the US. There are about 17,500 coaches in the US.

Looking at these numbers from the US for example, we can see that on average, a life coach in the US earns approximately US$ 77,000 which is a very good amount considering that most life coaches only speak at seminars and write books.

Some of the more internationally famous life coaches in the world include such names as Ajit Nawalkha, Alyse Parker, Bob Proctor, Christine Hassler, Esther Perel, Eva Redpath, Jason Goldberg, Marisa Peer, Michael Neill, Nora Dekeseyer, Rebecca Lynn Pope, Rich Litvin, Robin Sharma, and of course Tony Robbins among others.

The prominent business data firm Price Waterhouse Coopers reports that the coaching industry is the second-fastest growing sector in the world. According to them, by 2022, the coaching industry market size is expected to reach a value of US$ 20 billion. Experts predict this will grow with an average yearly growth rate of 6.7%.

As Tony Robbins has proven, with just mere “words” as your product and “speaking” as your service, you could become a multimillionaire even though you have no college education and came from a poor family.

Many aspiring businessperson seeking fortune and even fame mistakenly believe that you have to create a special product like a new invention, a cutting edge design or something along these lines before customers would buy your product which would possibly make you wealthy.

But the reality is much further from the truth. Tony Robbins only speaks at seminars and write books but he is a certified multimillionaire. We could also look at such famous authors like “Stephen King” who is also a certified multimillionaire by just writing predominantly horror books.

It might be noted that Tony Robbins never attended college. At the most, his education consisted only of a stint in high school. He mastered the art of public speaking and life coaching despite not attending higher education.

Does he have connections? At first he doesn’t, but once the opportunity in the form of Jim Rohn presented itself, he never had a second thought and grabbed it. Most aspiring businessperson fail to see the importance of developing connections and finding mentors.

If there’s one skill that an aspiring businessperson need to develop though, it would be people skills. This means learning to speak with people and convincing them with your message. It’s apparent that Tony Robbins has mastered this skill.

If there’s one important that Tony Robbins can teach us, it’s this: Poverty, A bad upbringing, a serious sickness, lack of education and lack of personal connections is not a hindrance or an excuse from becoming rich and popular.

We can also look at the late famed theoretical physicist “Stephen Hawking” who despite losing the ability to move or speak because of a serious disability still managed to become one of the most recognized and successful theoretical physicist of all time.
