Dog Rental Business
Everything and everyone seems to be for rent these days, why not pets especially dogs? As it turns out it’s already a rental business that has existed for years in such countries as America and Japan.
Besides these two countries, I found out that Australia and the United Kingdom also have companies involved in this business. However, America seems to be the country where the practice of renting out dogs seems to be the most prevalent.
What Is A Dog Rental Business?
You don’t have to be a genius to know what the dog rental business is, the name says it all. This business is all about renting out your dogs to your customers for a predetermined time. The rental time might involve a mere hours to a couple of months.
Probably one of the most strictest rules implemented in the dog renting business is that the dog should not be harmed in any way while they are in the custody of the paying customers who have rented them.
The rental contract terms vary from one dog rental business to another. There may contract terms for example where the customer renting the dog would have to pay an annual membership fee besides the fee they pay when they actually rent a dog.
There Are People Who Are Against This Business
Before we proceed further in this articles, let’s discuss one very important thing: There are many people who are against this sort of business. But let me be clear first, this conclusion was made after a few people in western countries were surveyed.
The study did mention that they are aware of the difference between how many westerners and asians think about pets for example. They noted that westerners are more strict in terms of adherence to treating pets with as much respect they do to other human beings.
There were a few reasons specified by people who are against the dog rental business. One of the reasons they gave was that dogs are social animals and gets psychologically stressed when their temporary social bond with the customer gets broken.
Another reason is that dogs get stressed out when rented out. Animal rights activists pointed out that dogs are sentient beings and should not be treated like a mere object that one could do whatever they want with.
The Argument That Dogs Are Social Animals Who Get Stressed Out When Rented By One Customer Then Another:
Animal rights activist like to point this out. According to them, dogs form emotional bonds with their masters especially after they have been in the company of their masters for extended periods of time.
According to animal lovers, once the social bond between the dog and its master is broken, the dog suffers emotional distress akin to a human losing a loved one which could be very unhealthy for the dog.
While there might be dogs who behave this way, there are dogs who seem to thrive with or without the presence of a permanent master. I have seen a small purebred dog who happily plays with whoever pets it.
This dog seemed not to care much for its permanent master and it seems it wants to play with any human it sees. This dog that I have seen would make a perfect candidate for a rental dog. All it wants to do is to play with any humans it sees.
So there are two sides to this argument if I include my real world experience. It depends upon you, the reader, to decide if renting out dogs do cause psychological stress to them if you ever wanted to go into this kind of business.
The Argument That The Dog Is Stressed Out During The Process Of Renting Them Out:
People who are against renting out dogs also like to point out that dogs get stressed out and even injured while they are in the process of being rented out. They like to point out for example that dogs get stressed out when they are transported from one customer to another.
This is an unavoidable discomfort for dogs or any animal that is transported. It would be wise to mention that the humans who drives the dogs from one customer to another also suffers the same stress.
I would like to point out that there are also animals who suffer a lot of discomfort when transported by animals. Farm animals like chicken, pigs, cows and others suffer more discomfort than dogs who are favored and are treated better by humans.
There would always be two sides to the argument. There would be people who are for or against the renting out of dogs. The important issue to note here is the legality of the business. There are more states in America for example who allow it rather than ban it.
The Dog Named “Higgins”
Perhaps you were first excited to start a business renting out dogs, but became nervous because I mentioned that there are people who are against this business, namely animal rights activists.
But there is potential for this business. A dog in America by the name of ”Higgins” earned a lot of money from its owners. The dog was rented out to movie companies who paid big money for it. It was reported that this dog earned several millions for its owners.

One of the most important information we can find from Higgins The Dog Wikipedia page is that it was no only him that earned money for his employers but his family as well. A few of the sons and daughters of this dog also starred in movies and earned money for their owners.
Why Are Dogs Rented?
There are a variety of reasons why dogs are rented. We already know one. Dogs are rented by movie companies so that they could be used as actors, extras and background effects for movies.
As Therapy Dogs
These are dogs that have been trained to provide affection, comfort, and support to people who need them the most. These people are usually people staying in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, hospices, or disaster areas.
They are very different from assistance dogs who are trained to assist specific patients with their day-to-day physical needs. We might say that therapy dogs are there more to provide company for their intended owners.
Therapy dogs are especially trained to be calm and social while being in the company of total strangers. They should also be able to control themselves even if they encounter uncomfortable situations like sudden loud noises and a crowded environment.
There are countries that require owners of therapy dogs to have a certification that their therapy dogs can sufficiently do the tasks of a therapy dog. So if you’re interested in setting up a therapy dog business, check your country’s laws if you need a certification.
Renting Out Dogs For Events
You can also rent out your dogs for birthday parties and other events. People who rent out their dogs for such events normally charge upwards of $US 200 for each dog they rent out. But some also charge wholesale prices for their dogs.
You can even combine your dogs with other animals and offer a Mobile Pet Zoo Service. This kind of business is popular especially in the United Kingdom. This business may be harder to setup because of the different kinds of animals needed, but may be more lucrative.
If you want to stick with dogs only, perhaps you can offer Puppy Parties. In this kind of business, you put several puppies in a playpen so that people, especially young children, can cuddle, handle and play with the puppies.
Of course, the customers who would be handling the puppies, especially the young children should be trained first on how to properly handle the puppies. This is a very important thing to do since the puppies can easily be injured by improper handling.
Renting Out Dogs As Temporary Pets
You can also rent out dogs as actual pets to people on a temporary basis. There are a lot of reasons why people can only afford temporary pets. The reasons could be because of financial or lifestyle constraints.
A person may be financially unable to afford a permanent pet because they can’t afford a house of their own and the place they are renting currently does not allow pets within its premises.
Another financial reason why people only need temporary pets is because they can’t afford the pet in the first place as well as their upkeep. There are dogs, especially the pure breed types whose price when bought can range in the several thousand dollar range.
These pure breed dogs not only cost several thousands to buy, but also cost a lot of money to maintain. As such, the only way some people can hope to have one is via a temporary arrangement.
Another reason could be time constraints. A dog lover may be a single person who travels a lot. These people don’t have time to take care of a dog on a full-time basis and their only recourse is to rent dogs when they have time for them.

Conclusion
The concept of a dog rental business is simple. You rent out your dogs whether they are trained or untrained like puppies for a specified period of time which could be as short as a few hours or as long as a few months.
There are people who are against the dog rental business, but the laws mostly allow their existence. Besides the possible huge profits that can be made from this business, it is also worthwhile to think that you are doing a service for people who desire dogs but can’t afford to have them on a permanent basis.
