Have You Considered Selling Your Original LEGO Designs?
Do you know that there is such a thing as a Lego MOC or “My Own Creation” communities all around the world? It is more important to note however that there are actually moneymaking opportunities in MOCs.
But making money off Lego is nothing new already. In fact, I have discussed the moneymaking aspect of Lego in another article of mine titled: Can You Make Money Investing And Reselling LEGO? Are There Still Other Ways To Make Money From LEGO?
One of the reasons why there is a thriving market for non-official lego sets is due to the fact that Lego sets are expensive and making custom built sets can be cost prohibitive for the creator.
For example, Lego technics are popular with the engineering types of people who almost always customize them. These people are always in need of specific parts not always sold on a one off piece by Lego. This is where the MOC aftermarket comes in.
STEP 1: BUY LEGOS IN BULK AT A CHEAP PRICE
The more Lego pieces you own, the more custom Lego creations you can create. You have to remember that the Lego pieces that you are buying in bulk are not meant for you to keep but to be used as a business raw material: the more you have, the more products you can produce.
You also don’t have much competition from other Lego buyers who are buying specific parts for their Lego creations. This is the reason why Lego bulk sellers always sell these Legos at discounted prices.
The Lego bulk seller and bulk buyer don’t realize or don’t really care that these seemingly bulk Lego pieces when combined together can produce a Lego creation which can be worth a lot of money.
For example, “Lego Ratchets” (I suggest you study them further for example: by watching YouTube videos) are simple devices but can be used by a lot of mechanics teachers to illustrate the purpose of one way gear design.
These Lego Ratchets can be made out of a few Lego parts but could be invaluable to mechanics/mechanical engineering instructors. Properly marketed, these simple Lego designs can be very profitable.
STEP 2: ASSESS WHAT YOU HAVE
After you have bought your fair share of bulk Lego pieces, it’s now time to determine what custom Lego creations you can make out of this lot. Be careful of buying after you have made a design, this would tempt you to buy specific Lego pieces which could be more expensive.
One of the resulting situation when you buy Lego pieces in bulk is that undeniably, there would be certain Lego pieces which would make up the bulk of your pieces. Usually, these are the small Lego pieces which seemingly are of little value.
This is where your creativity shines. These small but abundant Lego pieces can be combined together to create a larger but more rarer custom Lego creation. Alternatively, you can resell these small Lego pieces for a profit.
You might also get lucky and come across more rarer and unique Lego pieces among the bulk of Lego pieces you have bought. In these cases, you can take your creativity on a much higher level.
You can create one off Lego creations with these unique and rare Lego pieces. For example, you can create custom Star Wars designs which further enhances an already existing Lego Official Star Wars Set.
STEP 3: RECORD YOUR CUSTOM LEGO CREATION DESIGN
Anyone who have made anything randomly out of Lego pieces can’t deny the satisfaction they get from the random creation of an original Lego creation. But you have to remember that you are not building Lego creations for just leisure but also for profit.
This is the reason why just like any product that is made today, you have to formally plan your Lego creation and record it. You could use simple pen and paper or use softwares to do so. There is even an official Lego app for such purposes.
But whatever you use, whether they’re pen and paper or software, just make sure that your Lego design blueprint would be properly illustrated and easy for anyone to understand. The purpose of this would be discussed much later in this article.
However, don’t forget to build your actual Lego creation by hand so that you would see the actual results of your Lego creation. This would let you analyze the difficulties in creating your Lego creation.
You could also record your Lego creation process by taking pictures at almost every stage of your creation process. Nowadays, this is very inexpensive. You can use your cellphone’s camera with impunity to do so.
SELL YOUR LEGO DESIGNS
Now that you’ve made a recording of your Lego creation process, you can then turn this into a marketable product. Custom Lego MOC (My Own Creation) designs are actually being bought and sold online.
The advantage of these MOC blueprints is that besides giving instructions on how to build the custom Lego creation, they also give an insight into what the Lego creation process entails like how many Lego pieces are needed to create the Lego MOC creation.
If you are interested in such kind of moneymaking venture, you could for example Google search the keywords: “where to sell my lego moc designs”. For example, BRICK VAULT is an online site that does this.
I think one way that you could actually stand out from the rest of the other MOC design sellers is by actually informing the prospective buyer where the particular Lego pieces came from. This would be especially helpful for those Lego creations with rare parts.
If you do happen to have the actual Lego pieces and not just the design to sell then don’t forget to tell your prospective buyers also. This would attract the prospective buyer even more with them knowing that there’s already actual Lego pieces available for the design you’re selling.
SELL YOUR ACTUAL LEGO CREATIONS
If the buyer is more interested in buying the actual fully assembled Lego creation of yours, so much the better. This way, you can charge them with the designing cost of the Lego plus the labor cost of assembling the Lego and the actual Lego pieces themselves.
Don’t forget to also upsell the assembly instructions and any manuals you can upsell with your Lego creation. If you can also sell enhancements to your Lego creation, then so much the better.
It would also be helpful if you also provide them a brochure of your other Lego creations which you are selling. Alternatively, you can direct them to your website or your social media pages where your other lego products are advertised.
Another thing that you can sell is your Lego creation services. Perhaps your buyer has a Lego creation in mind but does not have the time to create or buy the pieces together. Sorting through specific Lego parts can be a marketable service in itself.
Lastly, don’t forget to collect your buyer’s contact details for prospective repeat sales. This is especially helpful if you know that your buyer is a true Lego enthusiast and not only a one off buyer.
SELL YOUR LEGO MINIFIGURES ART PAINTING SKILLS
Don’t also forget that just like other action figures out there, Lego Minifigures are not only selling well but are also being collected. There are even people who customize these Lego Minifigures.
For example, there are official Lego superhero sets being sold but there are people who further customize them. They do this by adding accessories such as new hair, hats and other accessories.
To the common person who don’t have the skills to make these small accessories for such Lego Minifigures, this might seem daunting. But, everyone given proper time can learn how to paint mini figures.
And time is a valuable commodity. There are people who are so busy that they cannot spare any time anymore for their pursuits. So what do they do? They buy time. In the case of a Lego Minifigure painting artist, their client buys the time they spent painting a minifigure for them.
Besides actually painting a minifigure, you could also make design stickers for minifigures. This might actually be much better as it further customizes lego minifigures. The disadvantage of stickers against actual paint is that paint is actually better looking than a sticker art.
CONCLUSION
There is an undeniably large number of Lego enthusiasts all over the world. In fact, there are 7 Lego set sold every seconds. This means that whatever type of Lego business you start, there would always be potential buyers for your products.
One of these business can be selling original Lego designs. The advantage of such a business is that you are serving a market need beyond what is offered by the Lego Company themselves. If you are lucky, this might actually becoming a profitable business for you.
