Would These Motorcycle Accessories Sell Well In Primarily Developing Countries? Could They Also Sell Well In Developed Countries?
According to the industry reports website Statista, the Asian motorcycle market size is projected to reach US$ 73.94 billion in 2022. The expected annual CAGR is 11.38% from 2022 to 2026 where it is projected to have a value of US$ 113.80 billion by 2026.
According to Statista as well, the motorcycle market in Europe is projected to have a CAGR of 8.81% in the periods from 2022 to 2026. It is projected to grow by US$ 16.57 billion by 2026.
As you can see, based from these two figures alone, there is a greater market for motorcycles in developing countries (of which many are in Asia) as compared to developed countries represented by Europe.
If you are interested in selling motorcycles or are in the motorcycle business already, it is advisable that you also expand in developing countries such as Asia because there is where the greater growth market is.
WHY IS THERE A BIG MARKET FOR MOTORCYCLES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES SUCH AS ASIA?
Let’s look at some statistics: The European Union boasts of 560 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. This is according to ACEA or more commonly known as the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.
Compare this with the average car ownership in Southeast Asian Countries which is a measly 177 per 1,000 inhabitants. This is according to the website paultan.org. The article is titled: ASEAN vehicle to population list - the correct facts.
As you can see, people from developed countries predominantly use cars as personal transport. This is further proven by the USA which is considered one of the most developed countries in the world. 95% of all US households have access to cars.
In addition to this, developed countries also have more strict motorcycle driving laws as compared to developing countries. For example, motorcycle drivers in developing countries usually overload their motorcycle passenger count yet don’t get in trouble with the law.
There are even many YouTube videos which shows motorcycles in developed countries being used as some sort of cargo vehicle, for example in Vietnam: Hanoi Crazy Traffic | MOTORBIKES OVERLOADED>
WHY DO MOTORCYCLE ACCESSORIES NEED TO BE COLLAPSIBLE AND CHEAP?
I don’t mean to insult motorcycle owners in developing countries but it is a known fact that many of them are financially handicapped and don’t own their own homes especially if they are living in cities of which most of the jobs, population and motorcycles are.
Most of these motorcycle owners rent or live with extended families where the option of a garage is almost non-existent. Unlike developed countries where there are strict home building rules, the houses in developing countries are usually space restricted.
Another reason why motorcycle accessories need to be collapsible is because as shown in the previous video, the motorcycle is a multipurpose vehicle for these people which means it must be able to transport both passengers and cargo.
This is unlike motorcycle accessories in developed countries where the accessories are rigid or are even built-in to the motorcycle which makes them unaffordable to many people living in developing countries.
The truth is this: Most people with families in developing countries would easily choose to buy a car as against a motorcycle if they can afford a car, but being unable to afford a car they have no choice but to buy a motorcycle for their family transport needs.

PRODUCT 1: SEAT EXTENDER
There are plenty of YouTube videos which shows extended motorcycles or motorcycles with extended seats. Here is a good example of one: BIGGEST AND LONGEST MOTORBIKE... In The PHILIPPINES?!.
I suggest you watch the YouTube video even for a few seconds only to have an idea of what I’m talking about. The concept of this product is simple and has already been proven: increase the seating capacity of a motorcycle by making its rear longer.
But you can also take a more easier route to this. You don’t have to extend the motorcycle rear. All you have to extend is the rear seat of the motorcycle: It’s as simple as clamping or welding an additional seat to the back of your motorcycle seat.
Although this product might have a problem in developed countries where the motorcycle passenger laws are strict, it might still find good use for transporting cargo. Imagine if you’re living in a developed country and you have no car but only have a motorcycle.
Imagine you’re in the Christmas tree business where you have to transport long but narrow products like Christmas trees, tubes, golf clubs and so on. Even if you don’t have a car you can still transport these items with a motorcycle with long rear seats while also having a passenger.

PRODUCT 2: COLLAPSIBLE SIDE FOOT TRAYS
Next we go to Africa where there are motorcycles that are not only extended but have side trays: "Cars cant reach us": Giant motorbikes are the workhorses in rural Cameroon.
As you can see the motorcycle accessories I’ve so far discussed are very popular in remote areas where the public transport and even the roads may be bad. But don’t let this fool you, they may be just like SUVs which are now the best selling cars because of their utility.
These motorcycles are not for show but they are workhorses. Imagine if motorcycle companies built these motorcycles instead of these motorcycles being custom built or accessorized. Chances are, more people would buy motorcycles which can hold more passengers and cargo.
Now, back to these motorcycles with side foot trays. Imagine if a street peddler used one. The clamped or welded foot trays can hold their containers of food on both sides of their motorcycle. Plus, they don’t have to get tired standing all day, they can sit on the motorcycle.
Imagine also if a motorcycle courier uses one such motorcycle. Just imagine how many more packages they can carry and deliver. Imagine also if a carpenter, plumber, or electrician uses one instead of a pickup truck or a van. The petrol savings alone are worth the switch.

PRODUCT 3: COLLAPSIBLE TRAILER
They’re just like the trailers attached to cars and other vehicles. They are also present in developed countries: Top 10 Motorcycle Camper Trailers | Best Camper for Motorcycle Touring.
This is a how motorcycle trailers are usually used in developing countries: Sotto Motorcycle Trailer Phippines 1. That’s right, they’re used to transport heavy cargo.
As you can see, the market for motorcycle trailers is very different between developed countries and developing countries. While the former uses them mostly for leisure, the other uses them for work related functions.
The advantage of a motorcycle trailer is that the motorcycle driver doesn’t have to worry about balance anymore. The motorcycle trailer in fact helps balance the motorcycle because of its connection to it.
Imagine if motorcycles and their trailers are used by small businesses in developed countries. They can more easily weave through congested traffic and spend much less petrol. The small business owner saves time and money just like business owners in developing countries.
CONCLUSION
A motorcycle is basically an engine with two wheels. This very design makes it very customizable. I have only given a small fraction of how motorcycles are being customized and accessorized.
There are more motorcycles than cars in developing countries as against developed countries. There is a huge opportunity in the motorcycle market for accessories that would further expand its use and capabilities. You and your company might just be the one to market them and profit from it.
