Pickup And Truck Vehicle Bed Seat Products And Services
The practical mindset in me never fails to wonder why there are no seats installed in pickups, trucks and other vehicles with truck beds in them. In case you are not familiar with truck beds, they are the empty spaces in the backs of pickup and truck vehicles used to carry non-human cargo.
To me, these empty spaces in these kinds of vehicles are being wasted when there are many people globally who have problems finding public and more importantly, private transport. This is why it is important to utilize as much space in these vehicle.
There are people who actually ride on pickup vehicle beds in many parts of the world. Even though there are parts of the world where riding in pickup and truck vehicle bed seats is illegal, many people violate the law either knowingly or unknowingly because of the need to ride a vehicle.
WHY PEOPLE BUY PICKUP VEHICLES
When I was growing up, pickup vehicles were mainly workhorse vehicles used to haul cargo. But times have changed including the perception of people to pickup vehicles. Many people began to see pickup vehicles as lifestyle vehicles.
This was because pickup vehicles changed design. In the old days, passenger comfort was not the first thing in mind of many pickup vehicle manufacturers. Their only concern was producing vehicles ideal for work environments
You have now pickup vehicles with the comfort and amenities of a sedan car. When during the olden days, people would drive pickups for use in rugged work, pickup vehicles are now also used for recreational activities like camping or going to the beaches carrying surfboards.
People Who Buy For Lifestyle Purposes
To many people in developed countries, this is now the new image of pickup vehicles. These vehicles ceased to have a rugged image only. Now, they are also associated with the active and sporty lifestyle.
These people are not interested in hauling cargo and god forbid, having their pickups dirty or even its paint scratched or even damaged. They are interested instead in their comfort but also want room enough in their vehicles to haul the items they own.
If you are interested in entering the pickup bed seating business, then know in advance that these people probably own large pickups with plenty of room to store both passengers and cargo.
Yes, I’m talking about the Ford F-150 type buyers and of buyers with similar tastes in pickup vehicles. These people are not likely to buy utilitarian bed seats but comfortable and fashionable bed seats.
It’s not like there’s no big market for them, but these people have enough room for passengers already that they hardy need extra seats. This is especially true for pickups with short beds of which many five door passenger in mind pickups are designed for.
People Who Buy For Practical Purposes
Then there are the people who buy pickup vehicles out of practicality or necessity. These kind of pickup vehicles are still designed like the old pickup vehicles of yesteryears. They are designed more to carry cargo than passengers.
The people who buy these kinds of pickups are usually those who are on a budget and need a workhorse vehicle rather than a lifestyle vehicle. I have lived in a developing country and have researched the transportation systems of many developing countries as well.
I have observed that many pickup vehicles in developing countries are converted to passenger vehicles out of sheer regard to save money. Simply put, many developing countries cannot match the buying power of people in developed countries.
In the Philippines for example, the government uses pickup vehicles converted to passenger vehicles for use in many branches of the government. They are used in the military, police, county, medical and many branches of the government.
But not only the Philippines, pickup vehicles are being converted to passenger vehicles and are used as public transport vehicles in such countries as Thailand. Converted passenger pickup vehicles in these countries exist because there is an unmet transport need in these countries.
And what is the importance of this information? If you are a sales executive from a developed country, selling only to recreational buyers, or selling only pickup vehicles as a non-human cargo transport vehicle, you need to asses this potentially big market.
Simply put, there is a big number of people who want their pickups to have the same cargo carrying capability for both human and non-human cargo. This is especially true for people in developing countries who want more flexibility from their pickup vehicles.
KINDS OF PICKUPS ACCORDING TO PASSENGER SEATING CAPACITY AND BED SIZE
Currently, there are only a limited number of pickup vehicle styles to choose from. These pickup vehicles can be differentiated based on the number of passengers they can carry and the size of their beds.
A pickup vehicle can be a two door or a four door version. I feel I don’t have to explain this, but here goes. Two door pickup vehicles have only two seats available. One is for the driver, and the other for the passenger riding shotgun with them.
A four door pickup vehicle has passenger seats at the back of the driver. It’s as simple as this. We can say that four door pickup vehicles are already sedan cars in terms of passenger capacity.
In terms of bed size, pickup vehicles can be categorized as short bed, regular bed, or long bed versions. Fortunately for would be pickup vehicle bed seating entrepreneurs who could be you, the more space is devoted to passengers for pickup vehicles, the shorter the bed becomes.
Since your most probable bed seat buyers are those who own two door pickup vehicles only, there is probably a lot of potential business for you when you sell your own version of bed seats.
THE CONFUSING RULES OF CARRYING PASSENGERS IN TRUCK BEDS
Although there are parts of the world where riding in the beds of pickup vehicles is illegal, more and more countries if not, states, are relaxing their rules. There are for example several differing laws about riding on pickup vehicle beds in America.
I found this 2020 article from the website Drive Safe Online which confirms for example, the confusing laws on riding on pickup vehicle beds in America:
Is It Legal to Ride in the Back of Pickup Trucks?
Compare this to other countries like the Philippines where there are no laws forbidding people to ride the bed of pickup vehicles.
And what is the importance of this in terms of business opportunities? It’s simple. If you are in the business of creating seats to be used by people to sit on the bed of pickup vehicles, you might find it hard to grow your business because of government laws.
So there is a world of difference between selling in America and the Philippines for example. In America, the government heavy regulates the pickup vehicles seat industry while in the Philippines, the government may become your biggest client.
CURRENT DESIGN OF PICKUP BED SEATS
Designing a seat for the bed of a pickup vehicle is very easy. After all, this product is in its most basic form, a chair or a seat attached to the bed of a pickup vehicle. Anyone with the proper tools can do this without the need for special education.
I did a research online and I found an American company selling such a product in the American market. The name of the product is BedRyder. You would find a lot of information of this product as well as the company online.
All you need to do is Google the search keyword ”BedRyder and you would be taken to a lot of articles and images regarding this in America. One thing to note about this product is that it is legal to use it in 50 states in America.
If you look at the images of this product in Google Images, you would notice that they are more of a leisure product than a utility product for pickups. If you image searched Google using the search keywords “pickup bed seats,” you would come to the same conclusion.
But if you image searched in Google the search keyword “police van Pakistan” for example, you would then see pickups being used as utility vehicles. A further image search in Google of the search keywords ”passenger van pickup” would yield similar results.
As can be seen, there are opportunities to create a business customizing pickup vehicles such that they both function as a human and non-human transport. Practical people and government officials are more likely to buy these vehicles than more expensive luxury vans.
THE PHILIPPINE JEEPNEY SEATING ARRANGEMENT
If you have ever been to the Philippines or have read a bit about the Philippines, chances are that you already know about the “Jeepney” or “PUV” which is short for “Philippine Utility Vehicle.”
It may not be a pickup vehicle in the strict sense of the word and design, but it has a lot of similarities to pickup vehicles. For one, it allows the entry of both human and non-human cargo on its rear part.
Another thing about it is that it has enough space in it’s middle that you can use to store your non-human cargoes. The Philippine Jeepney in fact doubles as a non-human cargo carrying vehicle despite the fact that it is mainly used for human transport.
…ITS MASS SEATING AND CARGO HAULING DESIGN
In fact, this type of vehicle and similar vehicles have this advantage over vehicles which are designed strictly for one dominant purpose, to only be a passenger transport vehicle or a cargo transport vehicle.
The design of these kinds of vehicles where the seats are facing the sides of the vehicle and not the front of the vehicle, make them superior in design in terms of flexibility. There are even versions of such vehicles were the seats fold upwards to give more space for cargo to be put in them.
Aren’t army trucks designed this way so they can carry more soldiers and cargo? This vouches for the superiority of this design in terms of utility of purpose. And from what is slowly happening all over the world, people are starting to see the superiority of this design.
COULD THERE BE A MARKET FOR THIS SEATING DESIGN?
There may not be a good market yet in developed countries for pickup vehicles to be designed this way, but I have seen this design persist since I was a child. The reason perhaps why this design has not become the more popular design is because many people are still fixated to western or developed country ideas.
In the minds of many people, forward facing seats are still the ideal design when it comes to vehicles. If you are a businessperson who is interested in developing bed seats for pickup vehicle and similar vehicles, I would advise that you sell to your potential customers the superiority of the non-forward facing seats in vehicles.
CONCLUSION
There is a market for products and services which turn the beds of pickups and similar vehicles into spaces in vehicles that could be used to seat and transport people. This market especially persist in developing countries were there is a huge demand for human transport facilities.
The seats in these vehicles usually face the side of the vehicle and not the forward part of the vehicle. This design is superior as it allows the flexibility for the vehicle owners to carry both human and non-human cargo with relative ease and with large volumes.
