How To Find A Job Summary List Details:

1. Campus

As a student, you might think that schools are just places for learning. However, schools are actually businesses which offer learning as a service. Therefore, even schools need employees and all you need to do is to ask your school’s administrators if they have job vacancies.

The advantage of having a job right at your own very school is that you don’t have to travel much to get from school to work and vice versa. Also, you have a very good chance of endearing yourself with the school’s administrators which greatly helps your academic and professional career.

2. Online Search

The first thing that job seekers usually do is to visit job portals like Indeed.com. They then put their job search criteria like job location, industry, salary range and so on. They then spend hours scrolling through the exhaustive jobs database until they find a few jobs they want to apply to.

As you can see, this job hunting “random search query” method takes a lot of time and could yield very poor results. Many job seekers forget that search engines like Google have powerful search capabilities which simplifies online job searches.

For example, if you are interested in finding jobs that’s near the place you live in, you could just type “jobs near me” in Google and it would quickly show you jobs that are near the place you live.

If however, you’re looking for jobs that don’t require a college degree, all you have to do is to type “jobs without a degree” in Google and it would quickly show you jobs that don’t require a college degree.

3. Job Portals

This is where most job seekers look for jobs. In fact, you would most likely find the same job wanted ad advertised on several job portals. Some of these job portals even have a Company Review section which further helps a job seeker make intelligent job searches.

4. Classified Ads

After job portals, your next option would be to search classified ads websites. This is especially true if you are looking for jobs that are more geared towards physical labor in small businesses like a small mom and pop factory, a restaurant or a small retail shop.

You might think that classified ads websites are a poor choice if you’re looking for a job, but this is precisely their strength. Classified ads are usually the second choice for job seekers when looking for a job that job seekers who use them face lesser competition from other job seekers.

For example, craigslist is a good site to find job vacancies not only for your particular city or country, but of other countries as well. Classified ads websites are also beginning to have sections that look exactly like job portals.

5. Acquaintances/Networking

Having failed to find a job in job portals or classified ads, job seekers usually then only resort to asking their family, friends and even acquaintances for possible jobs available. This is because many job seekers in general are too embarrassed to ask a favor from anyone regarding finding a job.

But this method is especially essential if you are looking for a senior position job. This is because senior position jobs require people skills and by displaying to a company that you have good acquaintances and is a good networker, you fit the senior position that you aspire to have in the company.

But even though you are not applying for a senior position job, this method is still very helpful to you. This is because many companies don’t advertise their job vacancies and the usual way they hire someone is thru referrals.

You could also formally advertise that you are looking for a job. More and more people are doing it nowadays especially since many classified ads websites allow you to post in their site for free.

For example, the classified ads website Gumtree have a lot of postings were job seekers openly advertise their skills in order to attract the attention of potential employers.

You might even step up your advertising effort up a notch by setting up your own website where you feature your resume and portfolio for potential employers to see. Website hosting is very cheap these days that almost everyone could have one.

If you’re worried that you don’t know anything about setting up a website, then there are very easy website building tools available out there. WordPress is the dominant free website builder that enables you to build a website even though you have no software coding skills.

As of 2023, 43% of all the 810 million websites in the world are powered by WordPress and about 500 new websites a day are built using WordPress. This is how popular and highly recommended WordPress is.

You also have the choice of using freelancers to setup your website for you. Fiverr is a world renown freelancer website that contains not only freelancers that are expert in setting up a website, but their freelancers can also software code, draw, and do marketing for you.

But these are not the only services Fiverr can help you with, the website also have freelancers who can write your resume for you, do your job application videos, tutor you, make a promotional book about you and so on.

7. Job Fairs

Many governments and recruitment companies also organize regular job fairs. The good thing about job fairs is that you get a high possibility of actually meeting a recruitment agent or a company’s recruiter in person.

This allows you to interact with these recruiters and get to ask questions regarding the job vacancy you are interested in. There is also a high chance that you get to be hired almost instantly by the recruiter.

The bad thing about going into job fairs is that you face a lot of competition from the many other job seekers who are also attending. So, be at your best when going into job fairs. Prepare your resume and supporting documents well so you would stand out from the rest of the other job seekers.

Also, make yourself physically pleasing and reassuring to recruiters. Shave or groom your facial hair and dress properly. Even these days, a lot of people still judge other people by their looks especially job seekers.

8. Gig Jobs

Like it or not, once you apply for a job in companies especially the big and established ones, there is a high likelihood that you won’t hear from them for months and in most instances, not at all.

So, what do you do while waiting for a company to give you a call? You can do gig jobs for one. For example, the e-commerce and delivery industry has been growing exponentially as more and more people prefer to stay much longer inside their homes as compared to going out.

A lot of people no longer shop in malls but rather buy their items online including their groceries. A lot of people also just order their restaurant food online instead of driving to fast food restaurants. Many people also see less of a need for owning a car when ride hailing services abound.

This is why the demand for delivery drivers and car drivers is increasing rapidly. This is might be a gig job that you can do while waiting for a call from companies. Others have become full-time Uber, Didi or DoorDash drivers for example.

With a gig job, you can control how you want to do your job unlike a traditional 9 to 5 job where you are locked in an office or factory for eight hours every single day. You can even turn your gig into a business by leasing your vehicles to other gig drivers.

9. Freelancing

I’ve talked about the freelancer website Fiverr and how you can hire freelancers in the site to do your tasks for you. But you can also register in Fiverr to be a freelancer. No matter what skill level you have or what are your particular skills, you have a place in Fiverr.

There are actual people who are making full-time income right in the comfort of their very homes by just being a freelancer in Fiverr. Of course, Fiverr is not the only freelancing website out there, there is also UpWork for one.

Another advantage of being in websites like Fiverr and UpWork is that besides being in business for yourself, you also have the opportunity to meet international clients which further boosts your reputation should you decide to work for a real brick and mortar company.

If you think freelancing is not a real job, think again. According to LinkedIn the freelancing industry is worth USD 3.8 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow to USD 12 billion by 2028.

10. Sell Digital Products

Just what are digital products? They are products made using a computer. Some examples are software programs, digital images, audio files, text files, databases, websites, videogames, videos and so on.

Let’s face it, if ever you’re looking for a job, it usually means that you need a source of income but have insufficient funds to actually start your own business. This is a problem that selling digital products can solve.

To sell digital products these days all you need is a computer which are affordable these days. You don’t also need to spend on delivery and warehouse costs because digital products can be delivered via the internet and can be infinitely reproduced without taking up physical storage space.

You also don’t need a factory, warehouse and office (or at least not in the beginning) when you sell digital products. Also, most tools for creating digital products are freely available online or are very affordable.

This is the reason why Tech Companies are one of the fastest growing and very profitable companies globally. Many tech companies are deeply ingrained in the daily lives of people. Names such as MicroSoft, Google, Apple, Facebook and similar tech companies are household names.

11. Commission Only Jobs

There are plenty of Commission Only jobs like selling real estate, cars, insurance, finance, personal care and similar products. Many people are turned off by these jobs because selling requires a lot of hardwork and rejection.

But there are good things about these sort of jobs. Usually, the initial commission and lifetime payout is high like in real estate and insurance. Also, you usually get to choose how you work like the number of hours you work and how you acquire clients.

Others even sell multiple commission only products as their main job and business. For example, they might be selling real estate and insurance at the same time while also selling personal care products on the side.

12. Start An Agency

Another kind of job or business that doesn’t require a lot of money to start is being an agent. For example, you can be a marketing agent and even a recruitment agent yourself. But how do you become an agent?

If you want to start a marketing agency, you could approach companies and offer them your marketing services. Don’t be afraid to call, send e-mails, or meet companies directly and offer them your marketing services. A lot of the successful marketing agencies were started by one person working on their own.

The same goes if you want to start a recruitment agency. You could also start as a one person business with a simple website or social media account where you gather the professional data of job seekers.

For example, you could use a Facebook account to setup your recruitment agency social media account. You could also use other free social media platforms to setup your online recruitment agency.

13. Be A Subcontractor

By applying to be a subcontractor for companies, you make the companies more agreeable to you. This is because subcontractors save the companies from expensive labor costs. Subcontractors are not paid benefits like annual salary increases, bonuses, health benefits and so on.

This is the reason why companies usually like subcontracting jobs. Of course, being just a subcontractor is not as ideal as being a full-time employee. But as a subcontractor, you are not usually tied to one company alone.

There are subcontractors who work for multiple companies and earn more than the average employee. Also, subcontractors are paid on a per job basis and not on a time basis which gives them more freedom on how to do their job.

14. Buy A Franchise

If you want to be your own boss and not just an employee but don’t want all the hassles of running your entire business on your own, you might want to consider franchising. There are many franchise opportunities available.

You might want to start with a cleaning franchise where all you need is a vehicle, cleaning supplies and tools. If you really want to go on the high end, you might want to consider a McDonalds fast food franchise.

Usually, the franchise company takes care of advertising, marketing and even client solicitation so you don’t have to do it. All you need to do is manage your franchise operations. A franchise might just be what you need before you go full-time with your own business.

15. Start Your Own Business

If you really can’t find a job, you might consider going into business by yourself. When you own your own business, you become the boss but you ultimately become responsible for your entire business.

This could be very daunting that is why it is advisable that you start a simple and inexpensive business first so you get a taste of what being in business actually entails. There have been people who went back to becoming an employee because they couldn’t handle the stress of being in business by themselves.

For example, as already stated, selling digital products is an inexpensive and relatively simple job/business to be in. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on offices, factories, warehouses, equipment, inventories and so on.

16. Invest

This could be a job for people who have a lot of excess money. For example, many people invest in real estate for a living. They buy real estate and sell it after a short time. There are those who collect coins and other collectibles as well.

But of course, to invest in real estate and collectibles you need to have a lot of excess money. This is the reason why it is only the mainly unemployed but moneyed people who participate in them full-time. This should not be a priority when you are looking for a job but have little excess money.

17. Rent Out Your Possessions

You might not found a job yet or have little or no source of income, but if you have possessions, you can rent them out to tide you by. For example, there are people whose only livelihood is renting out room spaces in their home or building.

You can for example, register your home in Airbnb. A lot of people have become rich off Airbnb which was just interrupted by the pandemic. Now that things are normal again, expect Airbnb to make a lot of people rich again.

If you have a vehicle, you can drive for Uber, Didi and DoorDash and rent out your vehicle while you are resting. You can also just rent out your vehicle to gig drivers. This is especially true if you have more than one vehicle.

18. Charity

Many people don’t understand how charities work. They believe that charity work involves volunteers begging people to donate to their charitable cause. But just like any activity that involves money, a charity organization is a business which also needs employees.

A charity organization can either be a non-profit or for-profit business organization. For example, the Red Cross is a non-profit organization while Omaze is a for-profit organization.

Both business models work, but in the case of Omaze, it has been especially great. This is because Omaze has been able to successfully attract donors with high ticket luxury items like custom built one-off cars and sports cars as prizes.

They have also successfully attracted donors by using celebrities like actors and athletes as spokespersons.

But the greatest intrinsic value of working for a charity is that besides earning a salary, you also get to help people in need. This is something that you can really be proud of.

But make no mistake, charities are businesses that need to earn money and with so many charities now, the competition for donor money can be fierce. This is why they have been turning to professional fundraisers to raise money for them.

If you have good marketing skills, you should definitely consider being a professional fundraiser. In case you didn’t know, there are organizations and charities who pay their fundraisers well and even give them bonuses like a percentage of the funds they raised.

19. Cause

Maybe besides looking for a job you also have a passion. Maybe you want to offset the effects of climate change by planting trees. Maybe you want to get rid of the garbage that is floating on the oceans. Maybe you want to cross the pacific ocean using only a lifeboat.

Just like charity causes, you could raise funds for your cause. For example Greenpeace has been involved in a lot of causes since 1971. However, when they first began, they were just a two person organization.

One effective tool that you can use to solicit funding for your cause would be to use crowdfunding platforms. Each crowdfunding platform has their own specialties, For example, Kickstarter is known for causes which involve business or product creation.

GoFundMe in the meantime is known for personal fundraising causes like personal emergencies and medical expenses fundraising. If you are jobless and have a personal emergency, you should give GoFundMe a try at least.

20. Solve A Problem

The world has many problems that need solving. For example, many people want to live healthier and longer lives and many people have gotten rich off trying to solve these seemingly unsolvable problems.

Don’t you know that some of the most profitable products today are weight loss and dietary supplements? This is because most people as they age tend to put on weight which as medical professionals advise is bad for one’s health.

The same goes for dietary supplements. Don’t you know that half of Americans routinely use dietary supplements? This is because everyone and not only Americans want to live longer and healthier lives.

You can create exercise routines, invent a sport, create a diet program, healthy cooking tips and other things that would make people lose weight and live healthier lives. If you notice, these jobs/businesses can be started with little to no capital.

Or you might consider the field of knowledge. Everyone wants to be smarter because smarter people tend to be hired more and earn more as well. Online learning is one of the fastest growing industry today.

For example, many people, both students and professionals subscribe to such online learning platforms such as Brilliant which is well known for their mathematics, physics, finance and computer science courses.

Although online courses offered by the likes of Brilliant won’t dislodge traditional schools in terms of learning, they nevertheless give students and even working professionals a competitive edge over other students and their co-workers.

You could create online courses on your own website or make learning content in social media such as YouTube. You might want to be a tutor and teach English, Math and Science classes online. Again, you can start these jobs with little to no capital.

Final Words

Don’t just rely on job portals, classified ads and even acquaintances when looking for a job. Chances are, most job seekers are already doing the same. You should explore all possible avenues for getting a job as mentioned above.

But don’t forget the reason why you are looking for a job: to earn money. This should be your focus and not just finding a job. You might find that besides working for someone else, you might also earn money by being in business for yourself.

Also, don’t make the mistake that only big and well established companies can give you a good job. Other organizations like small mom and pop businesses and charities might offer you a better job than big and well established companies.

By working in small mom and pop businesses, you get to learn faster how the business works unlike a big company where you are usually saddled only to a narrow repetitive task where you don’t learn much.

When you’ve learned everything to know about the business in your place of employment, perhaps someday you would consider setting up your own business by yourself.
