Could You Sustain Your Digital Content Business, Timewise?
You are excited. You have just started your very own digital content creation business and you are ready to go all out. You start on a furious pace. You want to create as much digital content as possible. After a while, you begin to experience it.
And what is it that you experience? A feeling of the enormity of the task you are doing. You finally realize the long road ahead. You begin to think that you are just in the base of the mountain and other people’s flags have already been planted at the top of the mountain you are about to climb.
Except what you are about to do is not just climbing a mountain. Mountains may be very tall, but they have their peaks. It is understood that if you have enough perseverance, you would ultimately reach the peak of the mountain.
There Are Undertakings Where Perseverance Is Not Enough
But there are undertakings where no amount of superhuman perseverance is a sure guarantee of success. For every one success there are thousands of failures. Anyone could have done their very best and have followed all the so-called success rules but they can still fail.
This is the same for creating a digital content business. I have personally tried creating a lot of different digital content from videos to gaming apps and others. I soon realized that dedication and even perseverance may not be enough to sustain a digital content business.
This is because there is a simple reality that many so-called experts at many forms of digital content won’t tell you, it takes a very large dose of luck for you to be successful in the digital content creation business and other similar endeavors.
Don’t be fooled by scammers who tell you that succeeding in anything is just a matter of following some so-called tried and tested techniques. I would like to repeat again, even the most best and most prepared person can fail even if they did everything correctly.
The Heroic Story
Perhaps nothing more inspires aspiring digital content creators like the story of a digital content creator who is about to give up and then out of nowhere, as if the stars all aligned together, his digital content becomes famous.
All his years of hard work and misery suddenly becomes rewarded by his new found fame and riches. This is the classic heroic story we find in many books of adventure. We like it. These stories warm the heart and gives us hope in our chaotic world.
These heroic or rag to riches stories are time tested stories many scammers have used to tempt naive digital content creators in their expensive courses. Just try watching digital content business entrepreneurship videos in YouTube and you would sure be bombarded with people trying to sell you courses.
I’m not saying this to spite these course sellers. All I’m selling is that you can enroll and watch all the digital content creation courses online, but this will still not guarantee that you would be a success in the digital content creation business.
But it is important to use statistics in any endeavour you wish to undertake. You must not be blinded by these success stories. I will repeat the same words again: For every one person that succeeds, thousands or more will fail.
Ask yourself: In my endeavour, will I be the one who succeeds or will I be among the thousands who would fail? You better be honest in answering this question. Don’t be blinded by your ego or pride when answering this question.
Let Me Scare You
I read a story about a woman who was so dedicated that her book would sell. She left her full-time decent paying job in order to work part-time so she can write and promote her book. Working part-time allowed her to finish her book, but it had ruined her previous career.
The only part-time jobs she can find are menial low-paying jobs. Still, her dedication in promoting her book didn’t waver. If she was not working part-time, she was busy promoting her book.
More than ten years have passed and she has not sold a lot of her books. She still works menial jobs and have so little money that she cannot even afford her own apartment. Those who only live in rented rooms have a good idea of how uncomfortable living this way is.
Analyzing her life now, she realizes that her book is not really meant to sell well. It’s just not popular with readers. She now expresses remorse for leaving her decent paying job so she can pursue a career writing a single book.
She is so bitter now that everytime she opens the trunk of her car and sees the huge numbers of unsold book she has, she almost wants to curse herself for being so blinded with writing the single book she wrote and spent a lot of money to get physically printed.
She is not alone. There are so many people who are so convinced of their imagined success that they lose sight of reality and fail to prepare for fallback solutions in case they fail in their imagined success.
Investing So Much Time
Have you heard of an unknown author who wrote a 500,000 word novel for years? He didn’t sell a single copy. This is depressing news but we have to consider his hardship in making his very long novel.
According to the story he said with a lot of bitterness, he devoted so much time writing his novel that he actually missed seeing his children a lot. He recalls with bitterness how his baby grew up to become a child with him barely noticing it.
There is also the story of a game developer who became so depressed that the game he developed for more than two years didn’t sell a single copy that he contemplated going to a psychiatrist to seek mental help.
These two stories are the dark side of concentrating or investing so much time in creating digital content or any endeavour that you forget that there is life beyond your digital content products or endeavors.
All these people I discussed worked hard and have unwavering perseverance. But in the end, they are so devastated by their failures that it has almost affected their mental state irrevocably.
Consider this when devoting all your energy to creating your digital content or other endeavors.
It’s Only Natural To Experience Burnout
I have been a digital content creator for a short time now. I have experienced the emotional highs of being excited to start a digital content business. Just like many digital content creator, I wanted to produce as much content as I want.
In the end, as I have previously stated, I realized my situation. I am at the base of a very tall mountain and I saw the peak of the mountain and the flags planted on it by the people who climbed the peak of the mountain before me.
But this mountain is different from a real mountain. This is the digital content business mountain. Not only does the mountain have plenty of obstacles that prevent you from climbing the mountain, but the mountain seems to be getting taller and taller.
And what is your reaction to all this? Produce more and more content especially if you see other climbers getting ahead of you in climbing this seemingly insurmountable digital content business mountain.
This is what amateur digital content creator experience and try to do. They tend to measure themselves based on the flags planted on the peak of the mountain and the climbers ahead of them.
This constant struggle to match the output of the people ahead of you in the digital content creation business can be very exhausting. Many amateur digital content creators give up because they decided that they can’t match the pace of the digital content creators who are ahead of them in the business.
Pace Yourself
Regrettably, if you are just starting out or a one person team, you cannot match the output of the best and experienced digital content creators. You simply can’t beat them in terms of output. This is not your fault in any way. This is just the pure reality of things.
What you can match them is with Reliability. You may not defeat them in output, but you can match them by being as reliable as them. This means that if your competitors are producing digital content daily and you can only produce digital content every other day, you stay with this output pace no matter what.
You may ask the question, what if my competitors decided to produce digital content twice everyday, what would I do? The answer is to continue with the pace you are comfortable with. You cannot defeat your competitors in output, but at least you can produce content reliably.
The Benefits Of Having A Reliable And Comfortable Pace
There are two main advantages to producing digital content at a reliable pace. The first advantage is that it allows you to incorporate seamlessly your digital content business with the rest of your life.
The second advantage is that you build a good relationship with your digital content customers in terms of expectations.
Incorporating Your Digital Content Business With The Rest Of Your Life:
This is where many digital content creators fail. Many digital content creators mistakenly have the assumption that in order to succeed in their digital content business, they have to devote all their time in the business.
As a result, many digital content creators abandon their social responsibilities to their families, friends and other people who are important to them. At the worst, a digital content creator could cause the breakup of their families.
At a minimum, a digital content creator may end up with very little to no friends. If you have a reliable digital content output, one that does not take up all your time, you are able to not only experience the company of others, but you get to experience more of what life has to offer.
In the end, you cannot allow your digital content business to be your sole purpose in life. It might be a majority part of your life but life is about experiencing other things. You may wake up one day feeling unsatisfied with life because all you have ever experienced is creating digital content.
A Good Relationship With Your Customers In Terms Of Expectations:
Digital content customers can be an unforgiving group of people. This is because digital content is easily consumed. You, as a digital content creator may spend an entire day or days creating a digital content that would be consumed by your digital content customers within minutes.
Take me for example as a digital content customer. I have watched entire YouTube of channels in less than a day. The creators of these YouTube channels probably spent months or even years creating their content which only took me a day at most to consume.
After watching these YouTube channels, I generally forget them and skip to the next YouTube channel which interests me. But there have been YouTube channels which I consistently go back to.
These are the YouTube channels which consistently produce videos on a regular basis. It doesn’t matter that maybe they produce only one video a week, but they have ingrained in my mind the thought that I would be able to watch a new video of theirs every week with no fail.
As you can see, they have trained my mind to be a regular customer of theirs. This is the real key to success in digital content creation, your ability to keep your digital content customers to regularly consume the regular content you produce.
It does not matter how many or little digital content you produce. The important thing here is that you turn your casual digital content customer into a loyal digital content customer. This is how you win the long game of the digital content creation business.
Conclusion
Many digital content creators soon experience burnout when they try to match the pace of the more experienced and successful digital content creators who are ahead of them in terms of digital content business progress.
By pacing yourself in terms of digital content output, you enable yourself to experience more of your life while stabilizing your digital content business. You also enable yourself to gain loyal customers who will stay with you for the long run because they know you would continue to produce new content for them no matter what happens.
