Would You Write Erotic eBooks?

Though I know of male authors who write erotic eBooks, I found it very hard to even consider writing one. Being a male author, I can’t help but be scared when I think of a scenario where I right an erotic eBook and be branded a sleazebag.

This is because erotica is heavily associated with pornography. And pornography has a negative perception in society. Of course, pornography has come a long way and has even been celebrated in some circles. But for the most part, it still retains its negative perception.

This negative perception is a big factor why there are many authors who stay away from depictions of sex or erotica in their books. It is not the duty of this article to decide if erotica is good or bad, this decision is made individually by everyone.

Despite society’s negative perception of erotica or even pornography, it is good business. Before social media invaded the internet, most internet content was dominated by pornographic content. Even today, the internet still has lots of pornographic content.

I remember an old story about a young internet entrepreneur. According to his story, he made a research of which website business to start. According to his research pornography sites do well as website businesses.

He created his website using nothing more than the images of naked women he found online. He gradually began posting videos of naked women as well. He didn’t pay these women, these were just pictures and videos he freely found online.

In short, he just collected digital pornography content and posted it on his site. Very soon, he was making a lot of money with ad monetization from pornography companies and by selling subscription services.

Within two years, he became a millionaire. He soon branched out into creating an online gambling website which is also a huge money earner for website entrepreneurs. You might think that this person is a person of questionable character.

But according to him, he comes from a conservative family and a graduate of a prestigious university in the US. Pornography and Gambling are mere products to him that makes him money. He has no special interest in them.

Of course, I couldn’t identify him or give clues of his real life personality. I might get in trouble legally. But believe me, if you search online for such Google keywords as “online pornography millionaires,” you would find such stories.

It is the biggest porn site in the world. It is so big that it is considered the YouTube of pornography. In fact, this Canadian-owned company rakes in more than one million dollars a day in revenue.

This pornography site also encourages amateur porn stars to upload their videos on the site where they can earn money. In fact, many people do upload their amateur porn videos in the hopes of making money from the site.

If you want to get some pointers on your erotica story and is interested in visiting this site, there are reports that the videos on this site contains viruses and malware. I don’t personally visit the site so I don’t know if these reports are verified, but apparently according to most people, this is true.

Why did I bring up Pornhub besides its use as a probable reference in an erotica story of yours? This site proves that there are millions if not billions of people who are interested in digital content about sex.

It does not matter what many people say to you if they are in front of you, these same people might be secretly interested in sex. It does not matter what your morals tell you. The truth is that sex sells.

It’s no secret that attractive women and men sell products no matter what they are. This has been true since the beginning of time. Puritans might complain and try to stop this practice, but people ultimately follow their instincts. They are attracted by beautiful people.

And sex does not have to be physical, it could only be visual. The reason why many strippers earn easy money is because there are men who are contented in the visual sex part only and not much on the physical part which can be dangerous.

Imagine having a sexual relationship with someone whom you later found out has a sexual disease. But again, even though physical sex can be dangerous, many people still do it. This is the power of sex to people, especially men.

If visual and physical sex is popular with men, erotica is popular with women. Many book readers are women, and erotica is one of the most popular and best selling story genre. There is no dispute in this.

There are many business reports and articles online that would present information showing that many women readers like reading romance and erotica. I am a man myself so I don’t understand clearly the reason for the appeal of erotica to women.

As an experiment, I read a few novels with a good amount of depictions of sex in them. I especially read books by women authors as I presume that they are targeting women readers as well.

Like many readers or maybe its because I’m a male, I found the sex scenes I read about in these books are one of the highlight of the books. The depictions of sex were pretty much tame and not even erotic, but I still enjoyed this sex scenes from the book.

I begin to wonder, if tame sex scenes were enough to interest a casual reader like me, what about very detailed erotic content? Once again, I’m assuming that I’m a normal reader who is easily interested by even tame sex scenes.

Being a man, and maybe because I’m a bit of a prude, I find it a bit difficult to even consider writing erotica. This is because I have been trained since childhood to avoid discussing about sex to anyone especially in public.

I know of a lot of people who feel the same way I do. Have you noticed that for most of the people you know, discussing about sexually related matters is a big taboo. Many people are just not trained to openly discuss about sex or write about it.

But make no mistake, there are many people both men and women but predominantly women who write erotica just because there is a huge demand for it. Just look around you, many people are interested in erotica.

I remember when I was still a young child and the internet wasn’t a thing yet, sexually themed tabloid newspapers was all the rage in the country I grew up in. I grew up with many tabloid newspapers showing naked women in their front pages.

These tabloid newspapers not only have naked women on almost every page of their paper, but they also have erotic stories which they claimed have been true stories sent by their readers.

Of course, I know now that these erotic stories are not true life stories but are just fictional stories written by the writers of the tabloid newspaper. I am a grown up man now and even old, and these tabloid newspapers have changed since.

The pictures of naked women and erotic stories are all gone now. These tabloid newspapers have been deemed “respectable” newspapers already and are now just reporting regular news, celebrity gossip, politics and sport.

I have noticed that this strategy is still being used today by many entertainment companies who initially use sex to sell their entertainment products until they become “respectable” companies.

It is not my place to advise you if you should follow this route and add a lot of erotica stories and scenes in the books you publish, I can only tell you that since the beginning of time, sex has been used to sell a lot of products.

If you feel that you are comfortable writing erotica, do consider that writing erotica is not a walk in the park despite what many so-called experts like to teach. You would find that many sectors of society have strong negative perceptions about erotica.

You may have a devil might care attitude and don’t care what people think as long as you are doing things legally and not disturbing or causing harm to anyone, but you might find that social backlash against sex is a powerful thing. One that may seriously affect your career and life.

Competition:

The good and bad news about the popularity of erotica, the good thing is that it is proven that there is a huge demand for erotica especially among women. Many people don’t like to admit it, but many of them secretly are interested in things related to sex.

This is the reason why erotica do well in eBook format. eBooks allow the readers of erotica to anonymously or privately enjoy their passion for erotica in peace. Unlike physical books, other people can’t easily see what the reader of an erotica book is reading.

It is easy for an eBook to hide its cover page. Imagine if you are reading a physical erotica book, you might find it uncomfortable to read it in the train next to other passengers who might see the cover of your physical book.

An ebook solves that problem. You may even adjust the font size of an eBook as you read it to enable you to get more privacy. A simple keyword search of the term “erotica” in Amazon would already give you more than 50,000 results. There used to be much, much more until Amazon clamped down on it.

Now for the bad news, the very success of erotica could be bad for you. Since many authors already know that erotica sells, many have joined the bandwagon and have written their own erotica books as well.

As a result, the word ’Saturation’ comes out. But it cannot be avoided. In any industry, once there is a product that sells well, many competitors show up to sell the same product. This includes erotica.

So do not be disheartened when other author’s erotic books sell and yours doesn’t. Most often in the writing world, it takes time to be discovered as an author, but once you are discovered, this is when your career trajectory starts to go up.

Not Many Want To Be Associated With Anything Sex Related:

There was a time when Amazon contained hundreds of thousands of erotic books for sale. But caving under societal pressure, Amazon began to cut back on its erotic book products. It started taking out erotic books they categorized as “too erotic.”

Amazon does not even accept ad submissions from erotic book sellers. In short, they don’t carry ads from books they consider as too erotic. But Amazon is not the only retailer who is distancing itself from erotica.

Other book sellers, retailers, online websites and other companies have distanced themselves from erotica because of societal pressure. As a result, your erotic books and your erotic book ads might find it hard to find a business which would support or carry them.

You May Get Fanatical Enemies:

There was an erotic story website which became more popular after it was reported that it and several other erotic story websites have been attacked by people who are against the publication of erotic stories online.

The reason I found out this online story was because the sympathizers of the erotic story website is trying to spread the news around that there were fanatical people who attack erotic story websites and maybe even others.

This is one thing you should also consider if you intend to write erotic digital content. There are people who are so against pornographic, sex, or erotic content that they won’t hesitate to attack you.

Luckily for the erotic story website, she was still able to continue publishing erotic stories online, but in a different format. There are also outspoken critics of pornographic, sex, or erotic content who would not hesitate to voice their very public opinion about you.

If these people are so fanatical to take down a website, consider what other extreme ways they can think of to disrupt your erotic book business or even your life. This is not meant to scare you, but this is just a sad reality in life.

Contrary to the public opinions about pornography, sex and erotica; many people are interested in these. Many may be publicly against it, but they may be secretly interested in these. Call it hypocrisy, but this is just a fact of life.

Despite their popularity, there are many obstacles in selling erotic books. Their popularity means there is more competition. Also, many people and companies are distancing themselves to erotica because of societal pressures. Worse, you might be attacked by fanatics.
