Making Money from Wine

Fun Fact: Global wines sales are increasing and it is expected to grow from 2018 to 2023 by 21 percent to $429 billion. This is according to the statista.com website. This is because of the growing standards of living around the world and because of this people have more cash to spend for luxury items.

The normal ways people earn from wine is to make them in a vineyard which is a huge risk because vineyards are expensive and wine takes a long time to mature to be commercially viable. People with limited finances and time are not suited to this. Retailing wine also takes a decent amount of capital so again financing is an issue.

Wine Critic

Many people dream of becoming wine critics because it seems to be glamorous. Note however that unless you have access to the many wines especially the expensive ones your career may be limited. This is not to say it is impossible.

I read about a wine critic who started blogging about wine tasting very cheap wines who eventually built such a popular reputation that companies who produce expensive wines began sending him complementary wines to taste and report about. All he had before he became a success was a bit of money but plenty of guts and patience.

This wine critic from America is named Robert Parker and he is considered the most widely known and most influential wine critic in the world. His wine rating articles on his newsletter The Wine Advocate are influential to many wine buyers and considered a major factor in setting the prices of Bordeaux wines.

To see how inspiring his story is one needs to know his relation with wines. He was introduced to wines only when he studied in France and drank wine instead of other beverages because they were the cheapest to drink. He became so influential after this humble start that his reviews have the ability to increase or decrease greatly the prices of a particular wine brand.

Grapes are Not the Only Source of Wines

Though most wines are made from grapes there are wines that are made from other fruits. These fruits can be apples, apricot, bananas, cherries, pears, plums, strawberries and so on. So do not despair because you do not have the resources to setup a grape farm. As long as you can ferment a fruit and it is edible you can create wine.

Do not think that just because you are producing wine not made out of grapes you will earn lesser income. The apple wine market for example is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.6% from 2019 to 2025. The market size of apple wine for 2020 is valued at $4.54 billion. It is expected to grow to $5.37 billion by 2025 according to grandviewresearch.com .

Apple wine is becoming popular due to its wide range of flavours which for example can be sour or sweet. It is also simple to produce. It is also nutritious containing plentiful amounts of calcium which makes it one of a few alcoholic beverage that is actually good for the bones.

In fact many fruit wines have their own individual health benefits like cranberry wine which is good for high cholesterol and has anti-cancer properties among others. Raspberry wine can significantly reduce sore throat pains caused by cold and flu. The health benefits of the different fruit wines are too many to list in this article.

Remember to make this health sales pitch when you are considering selling all types of wines especially with potential buyers who have health problems or are just conscious about their health. In fact many publications already report the health benefits of wine once taken in moderate amounts.

Investing in Wines

If you have a bit of spare cash that you want to invest then you can consider investing in wines. There are wines that increase in value as time passes by. Just make sure you know how to properly know how to preserve wine for example by keeping it away from sunlight.

If you think that the most expensive wines are those hundred year old vintage wines then you are mistaken. The most expensive wines as of 2019 are the dated 1992 which were bought for $500,000 at a charity auction in 2000. They were not even from famous wine making countries like France or Italy but were from America.

Who knows that cheap wine you bought at some obscure place you took your vacation on may turn out to be highly desired by others if not now but maybe in the future. There have been expensive vintage wines found hidden in the cellars of some museums, universities and even houses.

Conclusion

As previously mentioned also one can become famous and well paid by being a wine expert and can even start by sampling very cheap wines. Who knows other fruit wines may catch up on grape wines in terms of popularity that one may even become a fruit wine expert and become famous and well paid.

You might not be able to afford a vineyard to create your own wines nor open a wine shop to sell expensive wines but you can start out small and sell inexpensive wines instead until your business has grown enough that you can sell more expensive brands. If you are also an aspiring wine critic with limited budget you can do the same and start with inexpensive wines until more expensive wines become accessible to you.
