Wine Gift Baskets

Wine is not a normal drink found anywhere and is drank during an occasion or on special places like pubs and nightclubs. In fact you have to be considered of mature age to legally drink wine.

The Packaging

Though most people bring wine to occasions they are not considered special and usually comes only in a paper bag packaging. They are even packaged at worse in brown bags and in plastic shopping bags like common grocery items. This is especially true for inexpensive wines who are sold for quantity over quality in terms of such aspects as packaging.

I remember going on a wine trip to the Hunter Valley Wine Country of Australia and visited several vineyards for wine tasting. I bought a few bottles and even boxes of half dozen wines from these wineries and took them home. The wine boxes were plain brown boxes and the individual wines do not have packaging either. To me these lack of packaging lessens their appeal and even value.

My acquaintances who sampled the wine I bought liked it and want to buy it from me so they can resell it but where disappointed that they did not come in a packaging. His clients treated wine as a special item like a special gift which must be wrapped nicely. This simple yet powerful thought can be used by a wine seller to increase their sales.

They can sell gift packaging especially those especially made for wines alongside the wines themselves. I have been to liquor shops both in the Philippines and Australia to buy wine as a gift especially when I have no time to go to actual gift shops. I however have to present my rather expensive wine in a cheap brown bag which embarrass me.

The Complementary Food Products

There are also specialist wine gift boxes which may include meat samples, cheese, crackers, fruits, snacks and so on. I would have bought a few of these items in the liquor or wine shop if they are available especially the cheese which has a long shelf life.

There are many people who I have seen cannot drink wine unless it is accompanied by other food. I have met a woman insisting that she eat first before she drinks wine otherwise as she informed us her stomach would not be able to tolerate wine. For people like her a wine food pack would have been a perfect product.

There are many similar people like her. There are a lot of people who drink wine only on special occasions and If ever they do they drink wine sparingly. These are the kind of people who do not particularly enjoy wine but drink it as some sort of social function especially if they feel pressured to drink like when everybody else is drinking wine besides them.

I have also met a woman who only drinks wine if she is able to eat sweet foods as well particularly candies and chocolates. She cannot stand the bitter taste of wine and counteracts this taste of wine by chewing candies and chocolates as she drinks the wine. Yet she enjoys the social interactions of drinking wine together with other people.

There are still other people who counteract the effect of being drunk with wine by eating food especially meat which not only masks the taste of wine but also absorbs some of the alcohol in wine. This trick is not unusual as there are other alcohol drinkers who eat food primarily meat to counteract the effect of alcohol in their body.

As can be seen there are many people who are not used to drinking wine on a regular basis and need the aid of other foods to tolerate the effect of wine and even also to possibly mask the taste of wine. These people drink wine more as a form of social function rather than a genuine liking for wine.

Of course there are people who genuinely like wine but enjoy it better with food. That is why there are many guidelines or recommendations from so called wine experts as to which food goes well with a particular wine. There are certain foods being recommended for example for red wine and other foods being recommended for white wine.

Bag-In-Box Containers

I have also tasted wines in “bag-in-box” containers. These wines are inside specially sealed and insulated bags and are encased in cardboard boxes with a plastic tap where you draw the wine from. They taste like the other bottled wines I have tasted and would not mind drinking them in place of bottled wines.

This wine packaging is interesting as it has the shape of a box. A box that could be decorated like a gift box since it has a lot of surface area for possible designs and advertisements. A smart wine company could create an appealing design and market this for customers who are more into convenience than looks when it comes to wine.

The cardboard box also allows other products to be bundled with the wine as a giveaway or as another paid product without changing most of its design features. For example they can add cups together with the wine so that the customer does not have to provide their own cups when drinking wine. This is especially true if the purchase of the wine is an impulse buy.

Wine In Can

I have also seen online wines being sold in cans. These wines are not some sort of alcohol variants but are full fledged wines. They are also not just from small wine makers but rather from big and established wine makers. There are already those who sell wine in cans who predict that this would be the future of wine.

Just like bag-in-box wines these wines in cans can be packaged for example in half dozens or sixes and made to be more appealing to wine drinkers who want convenience more than product looks. If wine makers can produce packaging that are also visually appealing and expandable also to add other products that complement wine then they can stand to make more profit.

The Market for Wine is Growing

Wine resellers should try to expand their range to attract the growing client base of young people who are getting into wine. See this online article from MarketWatch titled Millennials And Wine to get a grasp of this developing market. This is the result of the increasing affluence of many people in the world which includes people from developing countries.

Conclusion

If you sell wine you can repackage the wine that you sell to make it more visually appealing and you can even bundle your wine with complementary products like food to increase their marketability and hopefully increase your sales. This can be done with clever packaging and by studying the wine preferences of your customers.
