Milk Business Ideas
Milk is the first food all people consume. We drank the milk of our mother even while we are inside the womb. We drank them as babies and when we are old we need milk to keep being healthy especially to strengthen our bones. Even remote tribal communities drink milk either coming from women or from animals. There are even milk produced from plants. Is there anyone who has not tasted milk in their lifetime?
The Milk Business is Very Competitive
The normal way of making money from milk is to raise cows which are the primary source of milk people drink today. Raising cows however is difficult and may not be financially viable for a starting entrepreneur. Cows are huge animals, can be expensive, difficult to purchase and require a barn and a lot of upkeep.
If you are considering making money by producing milk from cows take note that it is a very competitive business and where profit margins can be low. For example milk producers in Europe are heavily subsidised by the government because of the low income European farmers get from producing milk. This is good if you are a European milk producer.
The milk producers of Europe where then able to dump large numbers of milk to the African region and in doing so they devastated the milk production industries of the region. This is bad if you are an African farmer thinking of entering the milk production industry.
Milk from Other Sources
A solopreneur can start out by using other animals as milk sources. A goat for example is much smaller and therefore easier to maintain plus the milk of goats just like other alternative milk sources besides cows are growing in popularity.
Other Uses of Milk
Of course one can also sell additional products made from milk like cheese and butter. There are people who are making cheese and butter at home and sell them as either a source of full-time or part-time income. There are actually cheese and butter products being sold at a premium price to cheese connoisseurs by not so big companies. It all depends on the quality of your product and not the size of your company.
Milk can also be used as food for animals such as pigs. Milk contains high quality protein and is especially favourable for young pigs who need a lot of nutrients to grow fast. Milk however can be given at all stages of a pig’s growth up to the slaughter stage. Milk also has the advantage of being liked by pigs that there are farmers who milk cows just to give them to pigs.
A farmer who produces milk from cows for human consumption should also make it a point to convince other farmers that specialise in pig growing to also buy any excess milk they have not sold for human consumption. This ensures that no milk is wasted. Google “milk dumped in ground” and you will see how serious the problem of excess milk production is.
Two of our favourite pet animals also like drinking milk too. Dogs and cats also like milk. They also like cheese and butter. Though feeding dogs and cats these is not a widespread practice and animal experts caution against feeding them these in large quantities they are ideal food as treats.
Enterprising people in the pet food industry can market products such as candies made from cheese and butter to serve as dog and cat treats. They can also enhance regular dog and cat food by adding small quantities of cheese and butter to make them more tasteful to dogs and cats.
Milk is also used as fertiliser for plants. It contains proteins, vitamins and sugars that when absorbed by plants are beneficial for their health and increases their growth. One study revealed that plants can grow 26% more when milk is applied to the plant’s soil. The soil can also become more softer and able to absorb more air and water when treated with milk.
Enterprising people can sell these benefits for people who grow plants for food and as a hobby. I think with the price of milk as compared to water these people should concentrate on the hobbyists. Those for example who grow ornamental plants like flowers would spend more making their plants look more healthy by giving them as much nutrients as they can.
Milk is also used by people for beauty and medical skincare. There are people who claim that applying especially bathing in milk improves your skin texture and heals such skin medical conditions as eczema. An enterprising person can market this milk use for example to beauty spas and sell many gallons of milk in one go.
Conclusion
As can be seen there are many organisms that consume milk: humans, animals and plants. Milk comes from many animals and even plants and is plentiful in supply. The only reason I see why more people are not consuming or using milk products is because there is less effective marketing being done.
For example coffee is being marketed as romantic or trendy, tea is being marketed as glamorous or healthy, energy drinks are marketed as exciting in mass media. Milk is usually marketed as a healthy but not exciting drink. This bland image must change in order for more people to like milk.
