Wolf Man?
Part 1: Rumors of Wolf People
Renee was on a medical mission from the UN to treat the people of a remote tribe in Langkasa, Indonesia. She was with a group of Indonesian medical workers who were treating the tribespeople regarding their various illnesses.
Most of the tribespeople have varying levels of sicknesses, from cancer, malaria, tuberculosis and so on. Malnutrition was also rampant among the tribespeople especially the children. Renee wondered how these tribespeople can be so abandoned by the other Indonesians.
One of her Indonesian medical aids told her the reason. It was because of the remoteness of the tribe and also because of a rumor that there were wild creatures in the forest near the tribe which kills humans and animals alike.
Renee sighed, “How primitive are these people. They still believe in monsters and other wild creatures. These people should be educated.”
Her medical aid cleared her throat, “But these rumors have evidence attached to them.”
“What do you mean?”, asked Renee.
The medical aid’s face turned pale, “According to reports by the natives, a long time ago, wolf like creatures used to roam these lands.”
Renee nearly laughed, “And what happened to them?”
“The natives killed all of them, except for the last offspring of a pregnant she wolf,” said the medical aid.
“They pitied the baby wolf creature. They kept it tied up in one of these houses,” continued the medical aid.
Renee rubbed her chin with her fingers, “This is interesting. I want to see this so called wolf boy.”
Part 2: The Pitiful Man
Renee and the rest of her medical aids arrived at the house were the so-called wolf boy was being held. When they entered the courtyard of the house, there was a small room at the back of the house were a man was tied up.
His arms and feet were outstretched and were tied to the corner posts of the room. It was clear that he was not well taken care of. He was dirty and he smelled. His clothes were ragged and he was nearly naked. The room was dirty and smelly as well.
Renee felt disgust for the people of the tribe, “Why have you detained a man this way like some sort of an animal? You should be ashamed of yourselves.”
The chief of the tribe was apologetic, “I’m sorry but this is the best that we can do for this man.”
“I demand that you release him immediately and bathe him,” said Renee, “it looks like he is badly malnourished and needs cleaning.”
The chief of the tribe waved his hands in protest, “I don’t think we should do that. He’s dangerous.”
Part 3: Proof
“And why not?”, asked Renee.
“Because he is a wolf man. He would kill us the minute we let him loose,” said the chief of the tribe.
Renee sighed, “Do you really believe that he is a wolf man? Do you have any proof?”
“Yes, his mother was a wolf woman and so is his father,” said the chief of the tribe.
“Is that all the proof you’ve got?”, asked Renee, “Have you got proof that his mother and father were wolf creatures?”
“Yes, we have proof,” said the chief of the tribe, “the men who killed his parents saw them transform from wolf to human.”
Renee touched her forehead in disappointment, “Let’s assume that this man’s parents were wolf creatures, did you actually see this man transform into a wolf?”
The chief of the tribe scratched his head, “No, we haven’t.”
“And what do you think is the reason for this?”, asked Renee.
“It’s because he’s hiding his true nature from us, maybe when we’re not looking, he transforms into a wolf,” said the chief of the village.
“Maybe the reason he doesn’t transform is because he’s not really a wolf creature but just a man,” said Renee as she smirked, “I believe this so called wolf creatures of yours are just superstition.”
Part 4: To Free Or Not To Free?
Renee proceeded towards the tied man as she looked at the chief of the village, “You are violating this man’s human rights by keeping him illegally detained. He needs to be set free at once.”
The chief of the village tried to stop her, “He’s dangerous. He mustn’t be set free. We will not allow it. Just ask him if he’s a wolf man.”
Renee paused and looked at the tied man, “Why are being kept tied by the tribe?”
The tied man sighed, “It’s because I’m a wolf creature. I’m dangerous.”
Renee’s face turned red, “The tribe has just convinced you that you are a wolf creature when you’re not.”
The tied man bowed his head, “Please don’t free me. I don’t want to hurt anyone. I’m really a wolf creature.”
“Since when did you become a wolf creature?”, asked Renee.
“Since I was young. My parents are wolf creatures too. That is why I need to be tied and even killed.”
Renee can’t help but cry, “You poor thing. Clearly the tribe has damaged your mental state.”
“But I’m a wolf creature. Look at my fangs,” said the tied man as he bared his teeth.
Renee sighed, “You have no fangs and you are not a wolf creature. The tribe brainwashed you into thinking that you are a wolf creature.”
The chief of the tribe protested, “You are wrong, woman. You don’t know what you’re thinking. This man is really a wolf creature and he is dangerous. Do not attempt to set him free. He’s right were he belongs.”
Part 5: Freed At Last?
Renee was forced to seek the assistance of soldiers in setting the tied man free. She brought the man to a hospital to check if indeed there was proof that he was a wolf creature.
But to her amusement, the hospital found nothing that could possibly indicate that the man she just set free has anything inhuman about him. She and the doctors had a good laugh regarding how ignorant the people of the tribe were to believe in wolf creatures.
She took him to a homeless shelter where he was taken care of and fed well. He was free to roam the confines of the shelter as well as to socialize with anyone in the homeless shelter. However, he kept to himself in the shelter.
He kept telling everyone in the homeless shelter that he was a wolf man and needed to be tied. This alarmed people in the homeless shelter that they stayed away from him. When he began to shout non-stop that he was a wolf man, he was locked in a room where no one would hear him.
When Renee heard about this, she became angry and demanded that the homeless shelter set him free. But the people at the homeless shelter demanded instead that he be taken out of the shelter because he was scaring everyone.
Renee had no choice but to let him stay at a mental asylum where his non-stop shoutings would be understood. Renee felt anger to the tribe. She blames the tribe for causing the mental breakdown of the man.
Renee begins to cry as she wonders whether the man has traded one prison for another. But her bigger worry was the mental prison that this man is trapped in. According to the doctors who examined the man, they concluded that he was suffering a delusion.
Part 6: Agitation
Renee visited the man in the mental asylum when it was reported that he bit a medical attendant trying to give him medicines. He was now being kept in a solitary confinement and was even tied down.
Renee cried as she saw him all tied up in a hospital bed.
“Why did you bite your attendant? Now they have to tie you up again,” said Renee.
The man smiled, “I know you only wanted to help, but I was better off in my tribe.”
Renee protested, “No, you are better off here. In here, you would be treated by the doctors.”
“But I am not sick,” said the man, “my tribesmen were really only trying to help me when they tied me down.”
“But they brainwashed you,” said Renee, “you are not really a wolf creature. Your tribespeople only made you think that you are a wolf creature.”
“But I am indeed a wolf creature,” said the man.
Renee smiled, “It’s all in your head. I’ve checked with the doctors already. You are nothing more than an ordinary man who’s been brainwashed to think that he is something else.”
“What proof do you need?”, asked the man.
“I don’t need any proof. You are just a normal man,” said Renee.
The man sighed, “I was happier in my tribe, I may be tied but my people talk to me.”
Renee turned red, “You know I’m getting tired of you always wanting to go back to your tribe.”
“Don’t you know that your tribe has been holding you prisoner like some sort of animal since you were a child?”, continued Renee, “In fact, I’m recommending that your tribe be abandoned.”
The man turned red, “What for? They haven’t done anything.”
“Because their way of thinking is wrong. They still believe in monsters,” said Renee.
“Are you serious?”, asked the man.
“I’m serious,” said Renee, “that’s why I’m using your case as an example to abandon the tribe.”
The man frowned, “You shouldn’t do that. You’re nothing but trouble for my tribe.”
“I know what’s best for you and your tribe, believe me,” said Renee as she frowned.
The man looked at Renee with anger in his eyes, then he smiled, “You really don’t believe I’m a wolf man, right?”
“Yes, it’s all in your head,” said Renee.
The man bared his teeth, “Can’t you see my fangs. Look closely, you might miss it.”
Renee looked closely, “I can’t see anything.”
Part 7: The Attack
The man suddenly lifted his head with superhuman strength. As he did so, the straps he was tied in came apart. Renee was so surprised that she wasn’t able to avoid the bite in her neck which was done by the man.
The last thing she saw before she became unconscious was the eyes of the man. They were not the eyes of a human anymore but the eyes of a wolf. She was terrified to see that the man was smiling at her with his bloodied mouth.
Part 8: Another Wolf
When she regained her consciousness, she was in a hospital being attended to by doctors. Ultimately, she recovered but was taken off the case of the man who bit her. According to the reports by the mental asylum, she freed the man from the straps which bind him.
This according to the official investigation, enabled the man to bite her. When she also told them that the man’s eyes transformed to wolf eyes, they told her that she was just hallucinating. She was even laughed at because of this.
Renee never came near the man that bit her anymore. She was however convinced that the man was dangerous. She even looked behind her back always when she heard that the man has escaped the mental asylum and is now free.
